Who is Cy Rawls?

One of the questions that's been asked of the fine folks doing band wrangling and publicity for CyTunes is "Who is Cy Rawls?" Not sure that I'm qualified to sum up an entire human being in a short blurb, I've decided to punt to you guys. Post your take on "Who is Cy Rawls" in the comments to this post. The more people that respond, the better.

Cy Rawls never forgets you once he has met you. Cy may have one hundred friends in the club, and you may know only him, but he is never too busy to stop and chat and stand with you and watch a song or two and make you feel good. Cy always remembers the last conversation you had, and is always kind and smart enough to pick up where you left off. Cy Rawls has transformed more of my "nights out alone" to "nights out with a friend" than any person I have ever known in my life (and I'm old). Most shockingly, the more I speak with others, the more I realize he doesn't just do this with me – he manages to make everyone feel this way. And for that quiet, humble talent, among everything else he is and does, Cy is amazing.

Well Spoken Dan, ain't that the truth...brought tears to my eyes.

Cy fits more life into one day and night than most can manage to find time for in a month.

Cy is the kind of guy who remembers where you went to college in Virginia and then e-mails to congratulate you when your team wins the NCAA football championship...even though you've never seen a college football game in your life. He's that guy. He's also the kind of guy who brings a gift on your first wedding anniversary. Who does that?! Cy.

Cy Rawls is a mystery wrapped in an enigma.

Cy is the guy that has enough energy to take your dog for a walk, give you a ride home when you are too smashed to drive, swim the english channel, answer the most crushing trivia round questions with embarrassing success, lift weights, perform live comedy sketches, recite Rilke-Newton &- Master Shake(all with astounding accuracy)make your mom breakfast, and do cartwheels on the merry-go-round in pullen park-in 17 minutes........THAT is who Cy Rawls is.

When you invite Cy Rawls to a party, he'll always show. And even when your party is horribly lame, Cy doesn't just bolt for greener pastures. Cy is the guy that sticks around and lifts your spirits. He's the guy that somehow knows the subjects that interest you and will talk about them without missing a beat.

cy rawls remembers anecdotes and details about my ex-band that i forgot years ago.

he also will message you or email you out of the blue with some anecdote or topic he thinks might interest you.

i think when most of us can't remember where our keys are, or what we had for lunch, we realize what a special gift cy has for noticing the little details in life, and because of this, he helps to remind you to stop and notice the details, and to take the time to reach out to other folks, even casual acquaintances. it's our relationships with other human beings that makes life worthwhile, after all.

cy is a person who will drive 8 hours to see a band he totally digs and the drive home the same night, wake up the next morning and work out for two hours at the gym.

cy rawls has done the following for me:
- driven nonstop to and from philadelphia from chapel hill in one night to see a band. we only caught the last song of their set.
- gave me daffodils on my birthday.
- been awesome to me for almost ten years.

Cy is the sort of guy who, if he accompanies you as "wingman" on a social outing where your main goal is to get better acquainted with someone special, keeps things so relaxed and at ease that you will end up married to her several months later.

At least that was the case for me, George Jones concert, Dorton Arena, 1997.

Cy is the kind of guy who mails you a completely awesome wedding present when you didn't even really have a wedding. Who does that?! Cy.

Cy is the kind of guy who will drive you three and a half hours each way to pick up your parents' old sofa AND be polite and genuinely appreciative when your stepmother feeds him leftover pizza and canned soup.

He also has great taste in music, knows which basketball teams to root for (Heels, Lakers), and somehow manages to be kind and non-judgmental even when you're being a drunk asshole and he's stone cold sober.

I am trying to figure out how I have lived here for 11 years and made friends with so many people who are friends of Cy, and yet have never been face-to-face with the awesomeness that is Cy.

Every single thing I have read here about Cy is so great, except when I got to the part about the Lakers. I knew he had to have a character flaw. But I'm pretty sure that when I do get to finally meet Cy, I'll be able to forgive him for that.

Cy makes you feel cooler just by knowing him. And he's got enough for everyone!

It has always been too long since you last saw Cy.

Cy is a fellow basketball usher for UNC basketball games at the Dean Dome. He always seems real laid back and pleasant. Two staff members affiliated with UNC basketball visited him when he was in the hospital (Duke!) and contine to keep in touch.

Cy is the guy that I completely fell head over heel for when I saw him walk into a party carrying a plate of cookies that he had baked.

i can't say anything about cy that someone hasn't already said better here....but i will add one small detail: cy is serious about shaking hands after a tennis match. this exhibits something many of us are unfamiliar with these days: grace and honor.

John Cyrus Rawls is my hero.

Cy is the only guy who can make a ketchup-red suit work! Not even Deion Sanders, during his brief (but not brief enough!) stay with the Redskins could swing that successfully! And, as many have noted, he roots for the "right" teams -- ergo Washington Redskins!

It goes without saying that Cy Rawls rocks.

Cy is like a brother to me. He spends time with my family on every major holiday (EVEN X-MAS MORNING!) He has even been known to bring flowers to my parents on their anniversary. He's the only guy that will walk right into your house and make himself a sundae and the fact that he feels comfortable enough to do so is a compliment.

Cy would drop whatever he was doing if you needed him and I will always do the same for him.

Also, he's crazy as hell.

My husband doesn't know Cy very well and when I told him about all of this banding together for him he said "He sounds like Ferris Bueller!"

And it's so true!

Admittedly, I don't really *know* Cy. I saw him for the first time at the Great Cover-Up in 2004, and was compelled to write him on MySpace and tell him how much I enjoyed watching him jump around. Instead of the usual perfunctory "Yeah, cool - thanks" email back, he wrote a very nice email back saying how much fun he'd had and that he was so glad I'd had fun too. The next time I saw him out and about, I introduced myself to him, and he remembered our correspondence. From that point on, whenever I saw him out, he always said hello and called me by name, remembering any and all things we'd talked about since.

I guess that's what makes Cy so special - that he's someone I am barely acquainted with, but someone who has made such an impression on me that I feel lucky to know him even a little bit.
